The Virginia Way2Go Card is used for those needing help with their basic needs.

The Department of Social Services has teamed with the Department of Health and Human Resources to issue these cards that will take advantage of technology to quickly and efficiently connect people qualified for assistance with those who provide it.

The VA unemployment debit card is a preloaded card issued by the Department of Social Services for SNAP benefits. These cards look similar to other preloaded cards such as MasterCard and VISA, but instead of using it at their favorite store or online, they use them at an ATM to withdraw cash.

Features of using the Way2Go VA card are:

  • You can buy groceries with your EBT card at stores where SNAP benefits are accepted. (Note: not all stores accept EBT.)
  • If you apply for health care or cash assistance, you will be asked to identify yourself by showing the card or telling the worker how to find you through the card. (This is called “verification of identity.” )
  • You may be asked to show your Way2go card VA when using public transportation.

Virginia Way2Go card scam

One of the biggest drawbacks to using a card like this is thieves will copy your information and use it at ATMs. However, this is very rare, as it would mean stealing information from numerous cards.

This type of scam started in 2013 when a cyber gang used the Federal Trade Commission’s Educational video website for thieves to learn how to copy information off of Virginia Way2go cards.
